The right setting of your thermostat can give a significant effect to the amounts of money that you have to pay for your utility bills. According to a published article on Energysavers.gov -- we can save about 10 percent a year on our cooling and heating bills by only turning the thermostat back 10-15 degrees for every 8 hours. This can be one of great answers if you are looking for the ideal thermostat setting for summer and winter!

You may think that this option is not easy since you have to keep watching your thermostat because you need to reset the thermostat manually for every eight hours. But don’t worry! There is now a useful tool or feature (even some of new heating and air conditioning units are now already designed with this feature) that you can explore to do this idea. Yes’ you can use a smart programmable thermostat to save more energy and more money for every year!

Get more benefits by installing a programmable thermostat!

With a smart programmable thermostat, you will be able to adjust and program the temperature of your room -- when the heating & air conditioning should turn on /off automatically so thus you can get better option for a pre-set schedule. This can be so helpful to allow you don’t operate your unit as much when not too needed (like when your home is not occupied, or when we are asleep).

A good programmable thermostat should be able to accommodate the adjustable and multiple daily settings, which may include 6 temperature setting or more /day.

Ideal thermostat settings

The ideal thermostat setting for summer is about 26 degrees of Celsius (78 degrees of Fahrenheit) when your home is occupied and then you should set higher your thermostat setting when your home is not occupied (warmer than normal is much better). Or (as mentioned before) you can try with your programmable thermostat to set back about 10-15 degrees for every 8 hours.

With a programmable thermostat, you can also adjust the temperature of your room when it should be cooler (when you are at home) and when it should be higher or warmer than normal (when you are away).

Then for winter, you can also do the same strategies with your heater! For saving more energy, the ideal thermostat setting for winter is about 68 degrees of Fahrenheit (when you are at home & awake) and then you should set your thermostat lower while you are not awake (asleep) or away from your home.

With these ideas, you may be able to save about 5-15 percent a year on your heating and air conditioning bills! And this usually can be greater if you live in the milder climates than if you live in severe or extreme climates.

What else you should know?
  1. There are two major types of programmable thermostats, electromechanical and digital! Electromechanical models usually involve sliding bars or pegs and relatively easier to use. Digital models usually have more features, but some people may be difficult to use them. Choose one that meets to your style!
  2. If you use external programmable thermostat (not one of features in your heating and air conditioning), make sure you install it properly. Read clearly the manufacturer’s instructions, particularly instructions on properly installing your programmable thermostat. And don’t forget to choose the right location for the installation, which should be far away from skylights, direct sunlight, doorways, windows, or drafts.
  3. Get to know your habits! For example, if you can enjoy more your sleep at a cooler temperature, then you may like to begin a bit ahead for the temperature setback. Get to know also some schedules of other family members. There may be other certain times during the day when your home is unoccupied.
